St Augustine's Scottish Episcopal Church, Dumbarton, welcomes you! Come inside and have a look!

... We, at St Augustine’s, strive to share our experience of God’s love with all in whom we come into contact, through: our worship, our fellowship, our welcoming and non-judgmental attitude , our ecumenical links and our involvement with the local community, as individuals and as a church congregation, by which we hope to grow spiritually.

Our Parish Life

We would like to thank you for visiting our page!  The Parish Motto could be "Take us as you find us - and we'll accept you as you are!" There can be few Congregations in the Scottish Episcopal Church more welcoming than St Augustine's, and it's a welcome that we are intent on developing! You don't have to have a sense of humour to be a member here, but it helps! Enter into a world of fun-loving people who live life fully, often on the edge, with a real sense of adventure!  All life is here, and you will find our folk come from a wide cross-section of the Town and its surrounding district! Although a little low on young families, there is a large hard core number of workers. The commitment is total! It has to be!  Attendances are not brilliant, but we couldn't afford to employ people to help us with crowd control anyway! On a good Sunday, we have a little over 50 at the 11am Family Eucharist, and around 12 or so at the 9am, Prayer Book Service. Worship is Liturgical, but in the main fairly informal, and we're not afraid to start again if we get it wrong!

New Church.JPG (35687 bytes)Restoration and Change in the Future  -  Open to New Beginnings

Probably the biggest thing ever to happen since the building of our church is the Restoration, which  reached its conclusion at the end of  the summer of 2003, one hundred and thirty years after the building was erected. This caused  much excitement and interest in the town, and the weekend of 23rd - 24th  August 2003 was earmarked for special celebrations.

The congregation is inclusive in its attitudes, welcoming opportunities for ecumenism, and grasping opportunities to serve the people of our town. The Restoration Programme and all it entailed is documented elsewhere, and now the plan is to look at replacing the temporary Church Hall with a new structure aimed at making opportunities to love and serve the community in a prime-site area, at the bottom of the High Street. The vision is to work in conjunction with statutory and non-statutory agencies in "Collaborative Ministry" - the new Provincial "buzz words"! We've really been doing this for some time! Similar plans have been spoken of in the past, but this time, a scheme with Dunbritton Housing Association, may just the one to be fruitful and get us going! We aim to bring together every facet of human need, from spiritual to secular, including art, drama, worship, and service, under the one roof, possibly working with Anum Cara, a project supporting people with blood borne viruses

You will now have concluded that we are open to change and are willing to take chances and risks  to move forward. That is how every Parish should be! We sometimes disagree about how this should be done - but, hey- it makes for an interesting life, and we never fall out with each other! Living the Gospel should be an adventure, an exciting challenge, and we tend to deal with a God of Surprises! 2002 marked the revival of The Friends of St Augustine's.  As a result we have a regular flow of income while we enjoy ourselves!
